1998-12-01: Lucindale district council and Naracoorte district council merged to form Naracoorte and Lucindale district council (SA). This was renamed to Naracoorte Lucindale Council (SA) on 1999-10-01.
1999-07-01: Kapunda and Light district council changed to Light regional council (SA). Kapunda district council and Light district council had merged in ~1996.
1999-07-01: Status of Wanneroo changed from shire to city (WA).
2000-02-01: Status of Victor Harbor changed from district to city (SA).
2000-02-21: Armidale city (ASGC code 0100) and Dumaresq shire (2650) merged to form Armidale Dumaresq shire (NS).
2000-02-21: Casino (1650) and Richmond River (6600) shires merged to form Richmond Valley shire (NS).
2000-03-31: Status of Latrobe changed from shire to city (VI).
2000-07-01: Name of Kingston district changed to Lacepede (SA).
2000-12-01: Concord (1900) and Drummoyne (2550) shires merged to form Canada Bay city (NS).
2000-07-01: Nymboida (6050) and Ulmarra (7600) shires merged to form Pristine Waters shire (NS).
2000-08-02: Status of Palmerston changed from town to city (NT).
2001-03-27: Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that Campaspe shire council (VI) sought to merge with Murray shire council (NS). If this were carried out, it would create a shire that was partly in each of two states.
